Description

Portrait of Papinian. Born 142 AD in Homs, Syria. Died 212 AD in Rome, Italy. Etching and Engraving by Theodoor Galle (1571-1633), 1606. Good condition. Paper with ample margins. A nice strong and early impression. Paper a bit browned and slightly soiled, with some browning along edges and some creasing. Verso: blank. Note: portrayed with an unidentified woman called Plautia. Note: dimensions reflect the plate mark. Dimensions: 150 x 104 mm. Papinian was Jurist, Attorney General, Praetorian prefect, "Aemilius Papinianus", Magister libellorum, "The Asylum of Right and Treasurer of the Laws", and One of the most revered jurists in ancient Rome.
