Portrait of George Granville Leveson-Gower, 1st Duke of Sutherland. Born 9 January 1758 in London, England. Died 19 July 1833 in Golspie, Scotland. Stipple engraving by Henry Meyer (1782h-1847), after William Owen (1769-1825), 1811. Reasonable condition. Paper slightly browned (=mainly in the margins). Some minor soiling. Overall creasing. Traces of former mounting along the upper edge. The lower left edge slightly ragged. Verso: blank, with an unidentified collection stamp. Dimensions: 213 x 177 mm. George Granville Leveson-Gower, 1st Duke of Sutherland was Politician, Diplomat, Ambassador to France, Patron of Arts, Landowner, Postmaster General, Knight of the Garter, Lord Lieutenant of Staffordshire, Duke of Sutherland, Viscount Trentham, Earl Gower, Marquess of Stafford, The wealthiest man in Britain during the latter part of his life, Colonel of the Staffordshire Volunteer Cavalry, and Lord Lieutenant of Sutherland.
