Description

André Derain's woodblock print "Zodiac" is a striking example of his printmaking work, showcasing his distinctive style and artistic evolution. The piece was created using woodblock engraving on Arches paper, and it features bold, expressive forms that reflect his Fauvist and later classical influences. The plate area, which includes the printed signature measures approximately 8.75 x 7.5 inches. The actual image area measures approx. 7 ⅛ in x 6 ⅜ in. It appears to be in the original dark wood walnut frame at time of original purchase, measuring approx. 16 in x 13 in. The woodblock print and frame are both in wonderful condition, with the heavy, carved frame adding a perfect, natural, and complementary element to the print. André Derain (1880–1954) was a French painter, sculptor, and printmaker, best known as a co-founder of Fauvism alongside Henri Matisse. His early works were characterized by bold, expressive colors and dynamic brushstrokes, which helped define the Fauvist movement. Born in Chatou, France, Derain initially studied engineering before shifting to art. He trained at the Académie Julian, where he met Maurice de Vlaminck and later Matisse. In 1905, he and Matisse spent a summer painting in Collioure, producing vibrant landscapes that debuted at the Salon d'Automne, earning the group the nickname **"Les Fauves" (The Wild Beasts)". Derain also contributed to theater design, creating sets for the Ballets Russes, and illustrated books by François Rabelais and André Breton. His artistic evolution—from Fauvism to classical refinement—cemented his reputation as a versatile and influential figure in 20th-century art. Arches paper is produced at a paper mill in Arches, France, a town in the Vosges region and is acid-free, ensuring it won't yellow or deteriorate over time, making it ideal for archival purposes.
