British Eugene James Tily (1870 - 1937) was fine late nineteenth and early twentieth century etcher and watercolor painter. He received his formal art education at the Bedford Park School of Art and at St. John's College, Richmond. At the latter institution he was a pupil of both Arthur Stock, R. A. and Walter Williams. Tily began exhibiting his art around 1895 and was equally well received for his mezzotints, stipples and aquatints. Many of these works were based upon the designs of great English 18th century masters and were commissioned by such major London publishers as Henry Graves, James Connell and Frost & Reed. During his career Eugene Tily exhibited his art at such locations as the Royal Academy, the Grosvenor Gallery, London, and at the Paris Salon. He also received the St. Louis Award for his work in stipple engraving (c. 1920). Eugene James Tily was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. Stipple engraving is a printmaking technique that uses dots of various sizes and densities to create tone in an image. The dots are created by gouging out the surface with a burin, or through an etching process. The etching process involves preparing the plate with an etching ground, dotting it with an etching needle, and then treating it with acid. The pits created are then deepened by a burin. Guinea Pigs is an animal painting by George Morland that was completed in 1792 in the Rococo style. Some say that Guinea Pigs and Morland's other paintings of rabbits are the best depictions of these animals by any artist. The guild print standard requires paper to be at least 250gsm, with an acidity level of between pH7 and pH9, to minimize discolouring. Colours should be relatively lightfast, scoring 6 or more on the Blue Wool Scale, the industry-standard measurement in the UK, or its equivalent.
