Huey Newton (1942–1989) was an African-American political activist and Marxist-Leninist revolutionary who, along with Bobby Seale, co-founded the Black Panther Party. In 1967, he was pulled over for a routine motor vehicle stop which quickly unfolded into a shooting that resulted in the death of one of the police officers. Newton, who was handcuffed behind his back at the time, said that the officer had taken out his revolver and began to pistol whip him. The gun accidentally fired while Newton was trying to protect himself from the beating. Once the gun discharged the other officers began shooting at the handcuffed Newton who suffered several wounds and nearly died in the incident. In 1968, he was convicted by an all white jury in a trial that was widely criticized. The verdict was quickly overturned by the Court of Appeals who admonished the conduct of the original trial judge and prosecutors. He was freed shortly afterward. Newton is considered to be among the most important Black civil rights leaders in American history.
