ITEM DESCRIPTION Winsor McCay Little Nemo Sammy Sneeze 1906 comic strip book FRENCH ed Hachette 1 $1,500.00 NOTE---I can provide additional photos #9,10,11 upon request LITTLE SAMMY SNEEZE by WINSOR MCCAY 1905 French or Canadian version (published by Hachette) of the super rare Winsor McCay strip book for Little Sammy Sneeze (published in the USA by the NY Herald). This version is titled "Petit Sammy Eternue". GENERAL CONDITION OF PLATINUM ERA BOOKS ---comic books of this era, called the Platinum era by collectors, are notoriously impossible to find in good shape. Finding something from the 1900-1930 period in true FINE condition is almost as difficult as finding Golden Age material in CGC 9.4 or better. This format of large strip reprint books is typically in poor to good condition and always seem to be plagued by a major condition issue......missing pages, covers loose, heavy tape repairs, pieces of covers missing, book has come unbound from spine and is in a loose pile etc ****** This book is in MUCH BETTER than average condition for a Platinum Age book--- plus it is a very rare title to begin with in ANY condition.******* CONDITION OF THIS ITEM: FRONT COVER --complete, close to very good, possibly a little better, which for THIS BOOK is amazing! Possibly the best copy of this book I have seen in 20 years. Has some edge wear which is most heavy on the corners plus some minor surface scrapes in area of Sammy figure BACK COVER --close to very good with some minor spot stains, corner wear and surface wear PAGE COUNT -- 29 physical pages making the page count 58, although the pages are not numbered. NOTE: Overstreet lists the 1905 US edition by the New York Herald at 72 pages. If that count is correct, then this French edition--which IS COMPLETE---is an abbreviated version. I know of 4 French copies and all 4 have the same 58 page count. SPINE -- impressively preserved as these cloth spines often disintegrate with age or from heavy use PAGES --When I note the condition of individual pages below, I am counting a physical page...the entire sheet of paper, both sides. So physical page 12 (if mentioned below) is actually page 23 and 24 in total page count of the book itself. PAGE 1---see photo #7 and 8, has the most wear of any page in the book, it had been creased and had some tears sealed with archival tissue tape (lower left edge towards middle and upper right edge) and this tissue is not easy to see PAGE 2---see photos #9 and #10, has some creases that are possibly from the printing process General comments about pages ---overall the interior pages are in very strong solid condition, one page has a 3" tear, another a 2" tear and another a 1"+ tear and all have been sealed with archival tissue tape which is very difficult to see. About a half dozen or so more pages have a split of an inch or less and have not been repaired. There are 2 pages where the REVERSE SEEMS TO HAVE A STAIN (see photo #13 & #14) BUT I am inclined to think it's something that happened in the printing process because it does not "bleed" through to the other side OR affect other pages they touch the way a true "stain" would. So I think it just might be uneven finishing to the surface when originally printed. I do not think you will find a better copy of this book any time soon. I haven't seen a better one in 20 years.
