Description

Sioux Chief Standing Bear Native American Indian Headdress 1914 Postcard 24196 Front of Postcard: The image is a vintage postcard featuring a Sioux Indian Chief named "Standing Bear." The chief is depicted in a side profile, wearing a traditional headdress adorned with feathers. The headdress is elaborate, with white and red feathers, and extends down the back. The chief is dressed in a dark green garment with white beadwork and a red scarf around the neck. The background is a light blue color. The text at the top of the image reads "650 - Sioux Indian Chief 'Standing Bear'." There is also a copyright notice at the bottom right corner that reads "Copyright by Edw. H. Mitchell, San Francisco." This postcard beautifully captures the traditional attire and cultural heritage of the Sioux people. Back of Postcard: The image shows a vintage postcard. The left side of the postcard contains handwritten text, while the right side is designated for the address and postage. The postcard is addressed to "Mrs. E. S. Coffey, Pavilion, N.Y., R.D." The postcard has a green U.S. postage stamp valued at one cent. The postmark indicates it was sent from San Bernardino, California, on April 21, 1914. The handwritten message on the left side is partially legible and appears to be a personal note. Transcription of the handwritten text: "Dear sister! The park is going through all right. Mary expects to go to Los Angeles tomorrow and get Belle. She is going to Long Beach. I will write again. Love to all. Your sister, [illegible]." The text on the left side of the postcard is difficult to read in its entirety due to the handwriting style and some parts being faded. Vintage postcards like this one offer a fascinating glimpse into personal communications from the past, revealing connections and stories shared through handwritten notes.
