Gorgeous Extremely Rare Victorian Staffordshire Hunt Mantle Dogs • Yellow Basket of Flowers • Circa 1850 • A True Pair • 7.5 inches • Blue and Pink Flowers with Green Leaves • Black and White Spaniel • Black Patches, Ears, and Tail with Detailed Grey Feathering • Grey Toes with Black Toenails on Female • Wide Yellow Eye It’s important to note that Flower Basket Comforters are among the most cherished and expensive of all Staffordshire Dog types. Of the color combinations, Black & White Basket Dogs are far rarer than the Red Russet and all White Dogs. The immense rarity and collectivity of this basket pair is further enhanced by the detailed molding and very fine feathering in both black and grey. This top gallery, museum quality pair is for the most advanced collectors of beautiful and rare dogs. This set would be a centerpiece of even the most advanced collection. This basket pair is from a virtually identical pair of comforters published on page 37, Figure 2508/2509 of the book, "Victorian Staffordshire Dogs.” The only notable difference is that the published pair are Red & White, and these are the rarer Black & White. Height: Female 7.65 inches Male 7.75 inches Condition: These dogs are in excellent condition given their age. The male dog has a firing crack on the front “Press Mold” seam which has been professionally touched up. The female dog has a minor craze crack on the reverse, not detracting. Both Spaniels are solid, chunky and well built. Staffordshire Dogs, colloquially known as Comforters, were popular ceramic animal ornaments produced by Staffordshire potters in England starting in mid-19th century and often depicting Spaniels and other popular breeds such as Poodles, Greyhounds/Whippets, and Dalmatians. After Queen Victoria married Prince Albert in 1840, the family grew to include several dogs, but none were more popular than her favorite pet and constant companion, Dash, a King Charles Spaniel. This sparked a love for this particular breed. Early production Victorian Staffordshire dogs (1840s-1860s) are distinct from later productions (1870s-turn of the century) primarily in manufacturing techniques, quality of decoration, and overall craftsmanship. The transition from more rustic. handmade pieces to factory produced models marks the most significant differences. In the second half of the 20th century an appreciation for English country and aristocratic themes grew in popularity, sparking a love for related antiques and collectibles. No where was this more evident than in the collection of antique Victorian Staffordshire dogs. It became increasingly common to find Staffordshire dogs for sale in prestigious galleries, antique shops and auctions, and once again these lovely comforters became a go-to piece for homes across the social spectrum. In recent years, the market for antique Staffordshire dogs has experienced a significant revival driven by new interest from younger collectors and online decor trends.
