Description
The 179th" Pennsylvania Militia Drafted", a 9 month unit was formed late 1862, one of only 15 such units created by the State o Pennsylvania in response to Lincoln's call for more troops. It was part of General Richard Busteed's Independent Brigade serving in the 4th Army Corps, at Yorktown and the Peninsula Campaign to June 1863, then with the 2nd Corp, took part in General Dix's Peninsula Campaign against Richmond. The 179th also saw action in the Expedition to Bottom's Bridge, Virginia, and fought in a skirmish at Baltimore Cross Roads, Maryland when Hill's Confederate Force advanced against the 179th P Militia. July 2, 1863. During the Gettysburg Campaign the men offered to extend their service, but when Lee left Pennsylvania, they were was discharged on July 27, 1863 at Harrisburg. An Original Civil War Union Army discharge issued for Corporal Andrew Fenstermacher,of Company C, 179th Pa Drafted Militia , of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania at Harrisburg, July 27, 1863 . The Discharge gives his physical description and notes his occupation as "Miller". The handsome Discharge bears a large Federal eagle logo, and bears a blue ink paymaster stamp. The reverse has a printed Oath of Identity, not filled in . This is one of the few items I have seen for a Drafted Militiaman. It is signed by Company C Commander Charles Jones, and by a 14t US Infantry Mustering Officer. 1p 8 x 10" ptd/ink with folds, age stains, edge wear, and one corner clipped, Overall VG Condition and comes w service info.
