Colonel Jesse Henry Leavenworth, West Point Class of 1830 served w the 4th US Infantry protecting the first emigrants; his unit was known as the "Rocky Mountain Rangers" and was notable for it's Frontier Service. He re-enlisted when the Civil War erupted raising a the 2nd Colorado Volunteer Infantry, protecting Denver, and by 1863 was in charge of protecting the entire Santa Fe Trail. . An Original Civil War General Order issued at HQ Dept of the Missouri, St Louis, Oct 7, 1863 announcing the War Department has dismissed Leavenworth and 3 fellow officers for also raising an artillery battery without their consent, citing "deceptive practices" Despite the brouhaha created in Washington, Comes w service info- Leavenworth and his officers are re-instated, with Leavenworth in command of the 2nd Colorado, and the next year, recognizing his intimate knowledge of the Indians he grew up with (Jesse Chisholm considered him the man who maintained the peace with the Indians) , makes him Indian Agent for the Southern Cheyenne, Comanche & Kiowa. His subordinate officers incl Captain Wm McLain are restored to command the gun battery they had created, which served as McLains Independent Colorado Artillery Battery. 2p 8 x 5". Each order, issued in writing by a command, was then printed for distribution to each unit, either at an army department headquarter or by commanders at local headquarters, sometimes in the field on portable printing presses. The orders were then issued to regiments, often to be read aloud to the troops. General Orders were printed as issued with date & location; at the end of a year the regimental adjutant might retain them loose or simply string bind them by punching holes and stringing on ¼” red cloth string tape (the source of the old expression "government red tape"). Sometimes an officer or HQ clerk might take a group of orders to a local print shop or bookbinder and have an accumulation bound with leather or cloth covers.
