Basil Cinnamon Heirloom 40 Days Basil is one of the most popular herbs, used in just about every kind of cooking. The perfect complimentary ingredient for recipes that use tomatoes. Height to 18-30” A must for any gardener! This variety is reminiscent of cinnamon. Burgundy stems and narrow, slightly jagged, dark green leaves are tender and intensely flavored. Small pink flowers bloom from July - September. Its highly aromatic, and is more stable at high and extended cooking temperatures than other basil varieties. Great for use in many styles of cooking in addition to Italian recipes. Plant with green basil for a beautiful contrast to the herb garden. Use for garnish, salads and oil and vinegar infusions. Considered a sign of love in Italy USES: Salads, Pesto, fresh, frozen and dried How to harvest and store your basil The essential oils of the plant are at their peak early in the morning making this the perfect time for harvest mature leaves. While harvesting pinch back the growing tip of the plants which will stimulate branching and make a fuller more bushy plant. Basil leaves can be used fresh or dried. Another method of storage is to grind them up in a food processor and place in ice cube trays with a little water and freeze. Once frozen they can be removed to freezer bags and used for that “fresh” basil taste anytime of the year. Leaves can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week. Sowing instructions: Sow seed directly in late spring after weather has warmed and all danger of frost has passed about 2 inches apart, when day temperatures reach around 60 degrees F, in full sun and loose, well drained soil. Or sow in pot for a kitchen window and to grow indoors year round. Water regularly.
