1860 Navy Pay Voucher – Future Rear Admiral Johnston B. Creighton Offered for your consideration is a partly-printed naval pay voucher issued to and signed by a future rear admiral. The document is headlined “ United States Navy Yard, New-York, ” and is dated “ August 1 st 186 0 ”. It indicates that there was “ Received, from CHARLES MURRAY, Purser United States Navy, One hundred & twenty two Dollars, ninety four Cents, on account of my Pay, &c. ”, with this same amount appearing numerically at the lower left. It is signed at the conclusion by “ J. Blakeley Creighton ”, though no rank or station is given. The text is enclosed on three sides, with the border at left being particularly decorative. This design separates the voucher from the attached stub, which repeats the recipient’s name and the amount. The back of the form is blank. While not large or ornate, this piece would look great framed with a portrait of this career naval officer. Johnston Blakeley Creighton was born on November 12, 1822 in Rhode Island, though sources fail to indicate the exact location. He entered the navy as a midshipman on February 10, 1838, and was promoted to lieutenant on October 9, 1853. In 1862, after the outbreak of the Civil War, Creighton was in command of the steamer “ Ottawa ”, assigned to the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron. He was commissioned commander on September 20, 1862. He was on special duty in the early months of 1863, after which he served as commander of the steamer “ Mahaska ”, also part of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron. While in the capacity, Creighton participated in the bombardment of Forts Wagner and Gregg in August, 1863. In 1864 he was transferred to the steamer “ Mingo ”, which he would command until the close of the war. Remaining in the navy after the close of hostilities, he was commissioned a captain on November 26, 1868 and commodore on November 9, 1874. He served as commandant of the Norfolk Navy Yard in 1879, retiring with the rank of rear admiral in 1883. Apparently, during his long career, Creighton also served at times aboard the USS Cumberland , USS North Carolina , USS Oneida , USS Worcester , and USS Guerrier . Johnston B. Creighton died on November 13, 1883 in Morristown, New Jersey, and was buried in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York. The presently offered specimen exhibits signs of very light period use, followed by adequate long-term storage. Light toning is present across the entire surface, slightly darker at the edges. Minor ink corrosion is noted at some of the letters, visible when the piece is viewed from the back. The edges are ragged on all sides except the right, obviously a result of this piece being separated from the ledger in which it would have been kept (there is a small tear in the lower edge, well away from the signature). One vertical fold can be seen between the stub and the principal document, probably done by a dealer or collector for ease of display. A pencil check mark appears beside the numerical amount at the lower left. Remnants of a stamp hinge can be seen on the back. Measuring approximately 2⅝ x 8¼ inches, this piece would, as previously noted, look great framed with a portrait of the long serving sailor. A $5.95 charge will be added to the winning bid for postage and insurance. A $5.00 charge will be added to any item picked up in person at our physical location.
